Things to Declutter Today

As a professional home organizer, I see where clients struggle to let items go. Here’s a list of things that people often have a hard time getting rid of, but here is permission to let go.

  1. Old Magazines – We hold on to them because they’re “nice to flip through,” but they pile up quickly.

  2. Expired Coupons – We always think we might use them, but they just sit in our wallets or drawers.

  3. Old Receipts – We keep them for “proof of purchase,” but rarely ever need them.

  4. Clothes We Don’t Wear – Whether it's a shirt from high school or something with the tags still on, it can be hard to part with items even when they don't fit or aren't needed.

  5. Old Charging Cords – We keep random cords thinking we might need them, but most of the time, they just sit unused.

  6. Toys and Kids' Stuff – It’s hard to part with toys or gifts that have sentimental value, but if the kids have outgrown them, it’s ok to let them go.

  7. Junk Mail – We accumulate piles of junk mail, but there’s rarely anything important in it.

  8. Expired Food – We might have a pantry full of expired canned goods or half-empty spice bottles, which are easy to toss but we often forget to do so.

  9. Plastic Bags – We tend to accumulate them even though they can easily be recycled or reused.

  10. Books We’ll Never Read Again – Old textbooks or novels we’ve read once but can’t seem to part with.
